How to Care for Exotic Skin Boots: A Complete Guide

A pair of Cuadra Piedreros exotic skin boots can last decades — but only if you treat them right. Each skin has its own personality and care requirements.

The Universal Rules

  1. Use boot trees between wears. Cedar absorbs moisture and maintains shape.
  2. Rotate. Never wear the same pair two days in a row.
  3. Wipe down after each wear with a soft dry cloth.
  4. Avoid prolonged moisture and direct heat.
  5. Condition every 3-6 months with skin-appropriate conditioner.

By Skin Type

American Alligator & Caimán

Use specialized exotic conditioner sparingly — twice a year is enough. Never use water-based products on the scales.

Ostrich

Brush gently with horsehair to maintain quill texture. Standard leather conditioner works fine.

Pirarucu Fish

Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Light conditioner once or twice a year is plenty.

Hippo & Elephant

The most robust skins. Standard leather conditioner every 2-3 months is fine. Both develop beautiful patina.

Python & Lizard

Avoid bending sharply at the toe. Use specialized conditioner. Brush in the direction of the scales.

If Your Boots Get Wet

  1. Pat dry — never rub.
  2. Stuff with newspaper or boot trees.
  3. Air dry away from heat for 24-48 hours.
  4. Apply conditioner once fully dry.

When to Resole

Goodyear-welt boots like ours can be resoled multiple times. When you feel the road through your soles, take them to a quality cobbler.
